The still existence of animal abuse in Spain is a reality, and perhaps the problem seems more pronounced day after day due to the progress that has been made in the rights and freedoms of animals, but the truth is that there are still multiple cases of abuse animal in Spain.

Chronicle of animal abuse in Spain

History repeats itself with different names and breeds, but with many factors in common: rescued dogs, which currently have a happy family, but which once suffered an ordeal. Some of them still pale and urinate at the sight of canes or belts, which makes it clear that the animals do not forget.

The data released each year by SEPRONA (Nature Protection Service) speaks for itself: around 15,000 complaints per year for abused dogs, data to which other species are added. This same body of the Civil Guard carries out more than 11,000 interventions against animal abuse annually.

This mistreatment is staged in scenes worthy of a horror movie: hangings, gunshot wounds, malnutrition, poisonings, or cases of physical abuse, robbery or abandonment are some of the forms of animal abuse in Spain.

Hunting and animal abuse in Spain

To the Civil Guard data we must add those where this State security body does not intervene: according to several NGOs, more than 120,000 dogs are abandoned in Spain, and unfortunately a large percentage of them are game animals.

Although luckily the vast majority of hunters take care of their animals and keep them in good condition, the truth is that the percentages of abandonment are much higher in the hunting sector: the animals abandoned by hunters account for 40% of the total.

Animal associations estimate that greyhounds and hounds are the most abandoned, animals traditionally used for hunting. The figure could exceed 50,000 abandoned greyhounds and hounds annually, and despite the fact that the Spanish Greyhound Federation ensures a rigorous birth registration, it seems that illegal breeding and theft are behind these figures.

The mistreatment of exotic and wild animals

Wild animals are probably one of those that suffer the most from animal abuse in Spain. The keeping of exotic animals is allowed and it is quite free, so some people may have tigers, dangerous snakes or even alligators.

These animals, who can hardly see all their needs met in captivity, see their entire lives impoverished to a minimum when living in a house. Even other species such as the fennec fox or the meerkat are affected by the keeping of wild animals in captivity.

Fox breeds

Although increasingly prohibited, circuses with animals are another of the pending accounts with the fauna that we have, and one of the greatest examples of animal abuse in Spain. Training for abuse and hunger is the usual thing in these centers that mutilate the big cats so that they do not represent a danger.

A paradigm shift against animal abuse in Spain

The truth is that it seems that collective thinking in favor of animal rights seems to advance more every day; An example of this is the reactions to mistreatment on farms or to scenes of slaughterhouses or fur farms.

As for bullfighting, although every day in greater free fall, it is still one of the pending accounts against animal abuse in Spain. Every time the bullrings are emptier, and the demonstrations against them are more full.
