Dogs of the 'Bullenbeisser Generation'

Dogs that were created from a breed of German origin (currently extinct) are within the so-called ‘Generation Bullenbeisser’. If you want to know more about her, keep reading the following article.

What is the Bullenbeisser Generation?

The extinct Bullenbeisser breed is the procreator of several current dogs (with the exception of the Cordovan fighting dog, which has also disappeared). Among its main characteristics we can highlight its hunting ability, its molosser body, its short and brindle coat and its great musculature. Looking at a photograph of a specimen of this broad and strong jawed dog, it is easy to notice several similarities with modern day breeds.

What breeds belong to the Bullenbeisser Generation?

Good guardians and also ideal as a family company, the breeds that make up the Bullenbeisser Generation are the following (some recognized by the International Cynological Federation and others not):

1. Great Dane

It is the only large-sized Bullenbeisser Generation dog. Also known as German Mastiff, he does not have a clumsy gait, he is very friendly and kind. He became “famous” because of the character of Scooby Doo. The Great Dane is a dog not recommended for beginners, as it requires a lot of care. For example, you are prone to gastric torsion and, in addition, you need a lot of food every day.

One of his main qualities is fidelity, he has a unique temperament that is not often related to the size of his body. As for the coat, it can be fawn, brindle, blue, black or harlequin. In any case, they have the black truffle.

2. Boxer

Of German origin and of the Molossian type, it first appeared in Munich in 1895. It was a war dog and later used by policemen. With a flattened snout, wrinkled face, erect ears and a short tail, the Boxer has short fawn or dark-striped hair.

In terms of temperament, he is very active, vigilant and faithful. It can be trained without problems, since it is quite obedient. Be careful because it can be somewhat territorial and dominant with other dogs.

3. Argentine Dogo

This breed was developed by a doctor who is a fan of hunting large animals such as wild boar. One of its main characteristics is its completely white fur except for the nose, which is black. It has a large head and a square neck, its ears are usually cut to make it erect.

It is considered a potentially dangerous dog, and therefore, it is prohibited in several countries (for example Spain). However, when properly socialized and trained, it can make a good pet. It requires a lot of physical activity and, due to its skin tone, it cannot stay in the sun for long.

4. Alano EspaƱol

Another of the representatives of the Bullenbeisser Generation, in this case he is a light molosser, a very good runner. It was used as a guardian and to manage wild cattle in the Iberian Peninsula, as well as to hunt deer and wild boar. The temperament of the Spanish Alano is characterized by tranquility, nobility, fidelity, security and courage.

5. American Pit Bull Terrier

This breed of dog originally from the United States is not accepted by the FCI, but belongs to the United Kennel Club of its native country. In addition to being one of the dogs of the Bullenbeisser Generation, it is also grouped within the potentially dangerous breeds.

He has a very firm temperament, but unlike what is believed, he is not aggressive towards human beings by nature, but must be trained for this purpose. It has a slightly arched back in the lumbar area, round and dark eyes, wrinkles on its face, a square snout and prominent jaws.

6. Boerboel

This dog hails from South Africa and his ancestors are not only the Bullenbeisser, but also the Great Dane and the Bullmastiff. It is a very guardian breed, used for heavy work and personal defense. He can weigh up to 90 kg, he is strong, muscular and big. Its head is square and the muzzle is black. The ears are “V” shaped and the hair is short of fawn, brindle, brown, reddish, black or gray colors.

7. Guatemalan Dogo

He is an excellent watchdog and thanks to a local veterinarian he achieved international recognition from the FCI. The Guatemalan Dogo belongs to the Bullenbeisser Generation and was formed after crossing a Dalmatian, a Boxer and an English Bull Terrier.

Medium in size, its coat is predominantly white with some dark spots and a black nose. It has hanging lips, a strong jaw, a square head, and pointed ears. It is quite sociable with people, not very territorial, although a little aggressive with other dogs.
